director's commentary

the planet in this animation is mars. some people think it's the moon, and i really can't fault them for that as i did make it greyscale.

it might seem weird to portray the famously red planet as anything other than red, but i feel like i have somewhat sound reasoning. this video features the infamous face found in the cydonia region of mars (hence the title).

the image of the face comes from a series of black and white composite images taken by the viking 1 oribiter; i chose to emulate this by using a greyscale image of mars in the video.

many people took this space face as evidence of alien life, others believed it to just be a trick of shadow and light; either way, it's super cool and spooky!

the moon does actually appear in this video as well, though! it's the tiny rock with the flatwoods monsters hanging out on it!
