wilson: episode 4 "generations"
director's commentary
i'm sure you were all smart enough to pick up on this without me telling you, but this video is about AI.
the title has two meanings: 'generations' in the familial, father-son, sense, and in the art-stealing, scum-sucking AI sense.
i'll exercise a degree of restraint here by not going off on a huge rant about it in this commentary, but i sure as hell hope my disdain for AI came through in this episode.
just fucking jesus christ, learn some skills and do shit for yourself.
if i, a dumbass, can manage without it, so can you.
the ending, with alan on stage singing Chicago's You're the Inspiration, is a joke i've been wanting to make since long before this project was ever even conceived. don't ask my why i find it so funny, but i'm glad i was finally able to put it in something.
wilson being trans is something that predates this episode by at least a year, it was first mentioned in a post on my now-defunct twitter page. i think i handled the execution a little clumsily in this episode.
the idea was that since wilson had never mentioned his transness on the internet before, there would be no way for the fake-alan to know, thus revealing to wilson that this wasn't really his father. i think conceptually this is fine, but something about the way i wrote it makes my cringe up a little.
i think i was so focused on doing the idea justice that i made the scene a little too self-serious; which, if you've read many of these commentaries, you'll know i try to avoid.
of all things to be sincere about on the internet though, this is fine. trans rights.
bonus fact: there are a bunch of little references and easter eggs in this episode, see if you can spot them all - here's one for free: lime-fellow leonard is voiced by friend of the channel Gr33nManSam, and the corkboard behind him contains images based on his most popular videos at the time of production.
